Hipparcos, Iue, and the Stellar Content of the Solar Neighbourhood

چکیده
The spectroscopic parallaxes in the Hipparcos catalogue can be used to translate absolute stellar fluxes observed at Earth to the fluxes emerging at the stellar surface for nearby stars. The comparison of these fluxes with the predictions of theoretical model atmospheres allows us to determine the effective temperature and the metallicity of the stars. It is suggested that it is possible to study the stellar content of the solar neighbourhood making use of the large number of ultraviolet spectra in the archive of the IUE satellite.

Kinematics and age of stellar populations in the solar neighbourhood from Hipparcos data
The large sample of main sequence stars with Hipparcos parallaxes and estimates of the radial velocity has been used to study the relations among kinematics, age and heavy element content for the solar neighbourhood. The samples with V > -30 km s−1, although including stars as old as 1010 yr, have a very young component (age > ∼ 107 yr), and have a metallicity close to the solar one. Most of th...
متن کامل0 Spiral Structure Parameters in the Solar Neighbourhood
Two samples of O-and B-type stars and Cepheids with Hipparcos data have been used to characterize galactic rotation and spiral arm kinematics in the solar neighbourhood. An extensive set of simulations has been performed in order to assess the capabilities of the method and its sensitivity to sample errors and biases in the adopted parameters.
متن کاملThe solar neighbourhood HR diagram as a quantitative test for evolutionary time scales
The HIPPARCOS parallaxes have provided us with a precise HR diagram (HRD) of the solar neighbourhood, complete within certain limits. The scope of this work is a study of the stellar population densities in characteristic regions of the HRD to test stellar evolutionary time scales. We examine two HRDs (Mv ≤ 4.0), both based on the single-star entries of the HIPPARCOS catalogue. One is constrain...
متن کاملStar Formation History in the Solar Vicinity
The star formation history in the solar neighbourhood is inferred comparing a sample of field stars from the Hipparcos Catalog with synthetic CMDs. We considered separately the main sequence and the red giant region of the HR diagram. The criteria for our best solutions are based on the χ minimization of star distributions in selected zones of the HR diagram. Our analysis suggests that: a) the ...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Nearby Stars in Phase Space Mapped by Hipparcos : the Potential Well
Hipparcos data provide the rst, volume limited and absolute magnitude limited homogeneous tracer of stellar density and velocity distributions in the solar neighbourhood. The density of A-type stars more luminous than M v = 2:5 can be accurately mapped within a sphere of 125 pc radius, while proper motions in galactic latitude provide the vertical velocity distribution near the galactic plane. ...
